CPM SPY27(Crucible) - Spyderco announced a new knife steel, CPM SPY27 On January 15, 2020. The steel is made by Crucible, as you could already guess by CPM prefix in its name. However, as of writing this note, the steel is Spyderco exclusive. SPY in the steel name is obviously for Spyderco, and according to KnifeSteelNerds 27 is for Cobalt's atomic weight. Interesting fact is that CPM SPY27 was announced quite shortly after CPM S45VN steel was announced. Normally, you'd get one dedicated knife steel once every few years, if that, now two in rapid succession form the same company. Good trend I'd say. Anyway, the steel is brand new, and Spyderco exclusive. So far, for 2020, Spyderco announced 3 folders in CPM SPY27, Para 3, Manix 2, and Byrd Harrier. I'll probably pick up Manix 2 for myself for testing. For now, what we know are guesses based on its composition and promo materials. Overall, CPM SPY27 should be a bit tougher, more fine grained and more corrosion resistant than CPM S35VN steel thanks to both: increased Nb and N, and decreased V content, I suppose added Cobalt helps there as well. However, wear resistance is decreased compared to the same CPM S35VN steel. For the same reason, CPM SPY27 steel is easier to sharpen in comparison. Max hardness will be around 64HRC, but actual knives will most likely be tampered to 60-62HRC for light use knives, and I suppose 1-2 HRC below that for larger knives, but in the end it depends on the maker.
