BS1407(BS) - Low alloy tool steel. Also known as Silver Steel. Contrary to popular myth, does not contain Silver(Ag), which would be a waste of both, steel and silver. Capable of 64HRC max hardness. Used in razors and less expensive kitchen knives. Not stain resistant. As a low alloy steel, does not contain much in the carbide former department, so do not expect high abrasive wear resistance. Still, it will do well with thin, high polished edges. Interestingly, some sources refer to Bohler-Uddeholm representatives claiming Silver Steel is a good old AISI O1 tool steel. That's not exactly the case, at least as far as BS1407 standard specification goes. This alloy doesn't contain neither Vanadium(V) nor Tungsten(W), both of which are present in AISI O1, and carbon content is good 0.25 higher compared to O1, that's a lot of extra carbon atoms even if 0.25% doesn't seem much. May be Silver Steel in Bohler-Uddeholm internal branding is O1, I can't exclude that, but otherwise, BS1407 also known as Silver Steel is not AISI O1.
